LEMMINGS-STYLE PUZZLE × COACH TRIP
Lemmings, but they’re pensioners on a coach trip to Blackpool. Get them to the bingo before the coach leaves.
⏱ SEVENTEEN DAYS OUT · RUNS IN YOUR BROWSER · SAVES AUTOMATICALLY
The machine replaced the Lemmings bomber with a pensioner who blows a gasket and goes home in a huff. It replaced the builder with knitting. It has never met a pensioner. It understands them perfectly.
THE PROMPT THAT STARTED IT ALL 🧠
> A lemmings style puzzle game, but they're pensioners and levels are typical pensioner locations like Blackpool.▌
That’s it. That’s the brief. Everything else — every line of code, every pixel, every note — came out of the machine. Typos preserved for authenticity.Disclosure: a human may have intervened afterwards, when the machine made the first upgrade cost more than the GDP of Wales, or decided a run should last eleven hours. Even then, the human only fixed it by typing more prompts and sighing loudly. 🫠
Day Trippers is a puzzle game in the style of Lemmings. A coach party of pensioners gets off at the seaside and sets off walking straight ahead, whatever is in the way. You can’t steer them. Instead you give individual pensioners jobs so the rest reach the bingo, the tea room or the chippy before the coach leaves.
The eight skills are pensioner versions of the Lemmings ones: a stairlift to climb, a brolly to float, a blown gasket instead of a bomb, a tartan shopping trolley to block, knitting a scarf staircase, pushing a zimmer frame through walls, and digging with a spade or a garden trowel.
Seventeen days out, from Blackpool and Skegness to Whitby, Benidorm and the Tower Ballroom, each solved by the tests and played through in a browser. Every pensioner has a name, and the end-of-day postcard says who didn’t make it and why. Bingo’s off sends everybody fuming. No pensioners were harmed. Several were mildly inconvenienced.
A quick guide for your first session. The machine wrote the game; we wrote this bit from its README.
Read the briefing postcard: how many pensioners are on the coach, how many must get home, and which skills you have.
The pensioners walk straight ahead. Pick a skill with 1 to 8 or the buttons, then click a pensioner to give it to them.
Use trowels and spades to dig down, knitters to build up and over, zimmers to go through, and brollies for long drops.
Park a trolley to turn everyone back. Blow a gasket on a drain cover to free a pensioner minding a trolley.
Get enough of them to the exit before the coach leaves. Falls of more than sixty pixels and water are bad news.
Speed things up with F, restart with R, and if it all goes wrong, call Bingo’s off.
