🧪 IN INCUBATION Still being prompted into shape. Expect rough edges, odd balance and the occasional existential crisis.

Two factions, three campaigns, a crystal alien intelligence, voiced briefings and a superweapon each. We asked for an RTS. The machine gave us a franchise.

THE ENTIRE GAME DESIGN DOCUMENT

THE PROMPT THAT STARTED IT ALL 🧠

> Create a futuristic RTS game. Units are humans but in like mechanical body suits as the different units, which can be upgraded etc. And there could be drones etc. 2 main sides with a story, you can do a story mode with each - a mission could involve some units rather than building - maybe those are like special ops missions. The game has to be balanced and have different difficulty levels and in story it gets progressively harder both due to AI and what you start with or objectives. Isometric viewpoint, don't have to rotate, buildings can all just face a given way. Interestings maps and terrains. Free to play mode with lots of settings also. The story campaign should last a couple hours in total, with early missions not taking as long.▌

That’s it. That’s the brief. Everything else — every line of code, every pixel, every note — came out of the machine. Typos preserved for authenticity.Disclosure: a human may have intervened afterwards, when the machine made the first upgrade cost more than the GDP of Wales, or decided a run should last eleven hours. Even then, the human only fixed it by typing more prompts and sighing loudly. 🫠

About the Slop

Exodus Protocol is an isometric real-time strategy game for the browser. On the colony moon Vesper, in 2241, the Meridian Directorate and the miners of the Free Ridge Union fight over lumite, the crystal that powers everything. Their soldiers are humans in powered mech suits, backed by drones. It takes Command & Conquer’s sidebar, harvesters and briefings and adds Age of Empires-style tiers and upgrade lines.

Two campaigns of five missions each tell the same war from both sides, mixing base building with special-ops missions where you lead a few named units and build nothing. Finish both to unlock Concord, where both factions fight together against the Choir, an alien crystal intelligence, and then the Choir as a third faction. Briefings are voiced, and there are three difficulty levels.

Free play takes two to six players, human or AI, on seven hand-drawn maps or a map generator with seven biomes, with settings for almost everything. Each faction has its own suits, mechs, drones, defences and a superweapon, and upgrades show on the models. No moons were colonised in the making of this game. Several were generated.

How To Play

A quick guide for your first session. The machine wrote the game; we wrote this bit from its README.

  1. Start with a campaign: the Directorate’s Order or the Union’s Ash. Early missions are short.

  2. Build harvesters to gather lumite, keep your power up, and build from the sidebar.

  3. Drag to select units and right-click to give orders. A attack-moves, and Ctrl plus a number sets a control group.

  4. Research tiers and Armoury upgrades, and use the Codex to learn which units counter which.

  5. In special-ops missions you can’t build: keep your named units alive and complete the objectives.

  6. Finish both campaigns to unlock Concord, or set up a free-play game with up to six players.
