Eight words of prompt. The machine has never tasted a chip, smelt vinegar or been robbed by a seagull, yet it knew instinctively that the pub empties into the chippy at closing time. We find this deeply unsettling.

> Create a chaotic cooking game based in a chippy.โ–Œ

Thatโ€™s it. Thatโ€™s the brief. Everything else โ€” every line of code, every pixel, every note โ€” came out of the machine. Typos preserved for authenticity.Disclosure: a human may have intervened afterwards, when the machine made the first upgrade cost more than the GDP of Wales, or decided a run should last eleven hours. Even then, the human only fixed it by typing more prompts and sighing loudly. ๐Ÿซ

About the Slop

Frying Tonight is a chaotic cooking game set in a British chip shop, for one chef or two on one keyboard. Customers queue at the counter with tickets: chips, cod and chips, battered sausage, a fish supper or the lot, with salt and vinegar or without. Cut, batter, fry, scoop into paper, add mushy peas, season and serve at the hatch before they give up and walk out.

Leave anything in the fryer and it burns, then catches fire, and the fire spreads along the counters until somebody grabs the extinguisher. Each of the four shifts adds more chaos: spitting fryers that make the floor slippery, seagulls swooping in through the open door to steal food, power cuts, and the pub emptying into the shop at closing time.

Each shift is scored on its takings, with up to three stars. A bot plays every shift through the real simulation to set the star targets, so they are, technically, fair. The battered sausage was not consulted.

How To Play

A quick guide for your first session. The machine wrote the game; we wrote this bit from its README.

  1. Read the ticket at the counter: what they want, and whether they want salt and vinegar.

  2. Cut potatoes into chips and batter the cod and sausages by holding the work key at the board.

  3. Fry them, then scoop them into paper, add mushy peas if asked, and season.

  4. Serve at the hatch before the customer runs out of patience. Fast service earns tips.

  5. Donโ€™t leave anything in the fryer: it burns, catches fire and spreads. Grab the extinguisher and hold the work key to spray.

  6. Earn a star on a shift to unlock the next. Two chefs get a busier shop.
