THE PROMPT THAT STARTED IT ALL 🧠

> Can you create me a game, styled like the old 80s athletics games, where you are a 100m runner called John Benson. You mash space or click or tap to run, the faster you mash, the faster you run. You race 4 races in a season. You are already a good runner when you start, if you can mash faster than about 15 taps per second, you will finish in the top three. You win money when you place in a race, and you can spend money on various performance enhancing drugs. They make you faster. The presentation when you win a race is over the top, music, confetti, ribbons, nice animations. You get drawn in, you want to win more. The game is over when you win all races in a season, the celebration is even more over the top, pictures of you surrounded by trophies. Screen fades to black, newspaper cuttings of you being caught cheating. You are stripped of your awards, you lose everything. The game ends with you sitting on the street, disheveled, no friends, with a simple “game over” title on the page. Everything up to the final scene should be bright and bash and fun and addictive.▌

That’s it. That’s the brief. Everything else — every line of code, every pixel, every note — came out of the machine. Typos preserved for authenticity.Disclosure: a human may have intervened afterwards, when the machine made the first upgrade cost more than the GDP of Wales, or decided a run should last eleven hours. Even then, the human only fixed it by typing more prompts and sighing loudly. 🫠

About the Slop

John Benson Sprint King is a button-mashing 100 metres game in the style of 1980s arcade athletics. You are John Benson, a sprinter. Mash Space, click or tap to run: the faster you mash, the faster he runs. Wait for the gun, or you false-start.

A season has four races, and every place on the podium pays prize money. Between races, the Doc sells performance enhancing tonics from his back office. Each dose makes John faster, and the first one is free. The rest of the field takes them too, so a John who falls behind slips down the order.

Every win gets a bigger celebration: a fanfare, a chanting crowd, fireworks, confetti, ribbons and the prize money counting up. Win all four races of a season and you’re world champion. Play it to the end. It doesn’t take long. The moral was generated by a machine, which is the most worrying part.

A quick guide for your first session. The machine wrote the game; we wrote this bit from its README.

  1. Wait for the gun. Go early and it’s a false start.

  2. Mash Space, click or tap as fast as you can. Around 15 taps a second gets you on the podium.

  3. Finish in the top three to win prize money. A win pays the most.

  4. Between races, visit the Doc and spend your winnings on tonics that make John faster. The first one is free.

  6. Win all four races of a season to become world champion. Then keep watching.
