TOP-DOWN HEAD-TO-HEAD RACER × INCREASINGLY SILLY SCALE
Micro Machines the other way round: normal-sized cars, and everything else is tiny. Race from a parish to the whole galaxy.
⏱ FIVE LEVELS, PARISH TO GALAXY · RUNS IN YOUR BROWSER · SAVES AUTOMATICALLY
Eleven words of prompt. The machine read “macro” and decided that meant racing round Africa, through Saturn’s rings and joining the dots of Orion. We did not argue. You cannot argue with that.
THE PROMPT THAT STARTED IT ALL 🧠
> Create a game like micro machines, but instead 'macro' machines▌
That’s it. That’s the brief. Everything else — every line of code, every pixel, every note — came out of the machine. Typos preserved for authenticity.Disclosure: a human may have intervened afterwards, when the machine made the first upgrade cost more than the GDP of Wales, or decided a run should last eleven hours. Even then, the human only fixed it by typing more prompts and sighing loudly. 🫠
Macro Machines is a top-down head-to-head racer in the style of Micro Machines, turned the other way round: the cars are normal size and everything else is tiny. Each level zooms further out, from a parish of villages to the whole galaxy, so the same two cars flatten houses, then cities, countries, planets and stars.
There is no road. In the parish it’s a cross-country rally on muddy ruts through hedgerow gates and a ford. In Britain you race round the coast on the beaches while the tide comes in. On Earth the oceans are a puddle and the continents are walls. Then a slalom through the asteroid belt and a lap of Saturn’s rings, and finally a dot-to-dot through Cassiopeia, Orion and the Plough.
The camera follows the leader. Leave the trailing car off screen for three seconds and the leader takes the point, and first to five wins the level. Speed cameras issue absurd fines, planning officers stop you in your tracks, and every car gets an itemised invoice at the end. The Intergalactic Planning Inspectorate was, regrettably, also AI-generated.
A quick guide for your first session. The machine wrote the game; we wrote this bit from its README.
Pick a level. Beat the CPU on a level to open the next, or race a friend on any open level.
Follow the course laid out in the level. There’s no road, and cutting across counts for nothing.
Bounce off hedges, walls, cliffs and stars, but stay out of rivers, the sea and the Sun or you’re put back behind.
Hit ramps fast enough to clear the jump, and grab boosts like builder’s tea, the jet stream and gravity slingshots.
Get far enough ahead that your rival drops off the screen. If they’re still off it after three seconds, you take the point.
First to five points wins the level. After 30 seconds without a winner the screen starts to close in.
These are real screenshots. Somehow these are the least AI-looking images on the site.
