We asked the machine to imagine being a pinball. It did not hesitate. It did not ask why. It simply became the ball, and honestly it seems happier for it.

THE PROMPT THAT STARTED IT ALL 🧠

> Create an arcade game whereby you're a pinball - doesn't have to be in a pinball machine - but it's from the point of view of the pinball - be creative. Ensure it's fun.▌

That’s it. That’s the brief. Everything else — every line of code, every pixel, every note — came out of the machine. Typos preserved for authenticity.Disclosure: a human may have intervened afterwards, when the machine made the first upgrade cost more than the GDP of Wales, or decided a run should last eleven hours. Even then, the human only fixed it by typing more prompts and sighing loudly. 🫠

About the Slop

Extra Ball puts the camera inside a pinball and flings it through the sky. There’s no machine: the course is a chain of small pinball decks floating above a glowing abyss, and you are the ball.

Land on a deck and roll towards its flippers, which rise up in front of you like towers with the drain glowing between them. Press Space as you reach a flipper and it whacks you off the launch ramp towards the next deck. Hit near the tip for a perfect flip. In the air, steer, bounce off floating bumpers and thread rings for a combo, while a dotted line shows where you’ll land.

Every six decks the sky changes, from Sunset Skyfield to Neon City, Storm Front and Deep Space, where planets bend your flight. Spell EXTRA for another ball. Built in Three.js with bloom and synthesised sound. No pinballs were consulted, as they have no mouths.

How To Play

A quick guide for your first session. The machine wrote the game; we wrote this bit from its README.

  1. Roll down the deck towards the flippers, steering with left and right.

  2. Press Space just as you reach a flipper. Hit near the tip for a perfect flip and more distance.

  3. In the air, steer towards the next deck. The dotted landing line turns green when you’re on target.

  4. Bounce off bumpers and fly through rings for a combo, and use up and down to thrust or brake with the spin meter.

  5. Miss the flip and you drop into the abyss. Each deck you reach is a checkpoint for your next ball.

  6. Collect the letters E, X, T, R and A for another ball. Press C to switch to the chase camera.
