TOP-DOWN PAINTBALL BATTLE ROYALE × ROGUELIKE
A 32-player pixel-art paintball battle royale with fog of war, a closing paint storm and a roguelike run.
⏱ FIVE ROUNDS, ONE RUN · RUNS IN YOUR BROWSER · SAVES AUTOMATICALLY
One sentence of prompt. Thirty-one opponents. Infinite paint. The machine also threw in a perk draft, a token shop and a paint storm, because apparently that’s what paintball is now.
THE PROMPT THAT STARTED IT ALL 🧠
> Create me roguelike paintballing game, top down 2D pixel art, fog of war, large playfield, 32 players (31 controlled by the computer.) Complete with music and sound effects.▌
That’s it. That’s the brief. Everything else — every line of code, every pixel, every note — came out of the machine. Typos preserved for authenticity.Disclosure: a human may have intervened afterwards, when the machine made the first upgrade cost more than the GDP of Wales, or decided a run should last eleven hours. Even then, the human only fixed it by typing more prompts and sighing loudly. 🫠
Paintball Rogue is a top-down pixel-art paintball battle royale with a roguelike run. Each round drops you and 31 CPU players into a newly generated arena: woodland, a scrapyard, ruined streets, a speedball park and a night-time final. A purple paint storm closes in, and you have to finish high enough to go through: top 16, then 10, 6 and 3, then last one standing.
You only see what’s in your line of sight, furthest where you aim. Walls, trees and smoke block sight, and bushes and tall grass hide anyone who isn’t firing. Every paintball leaves its colour on the ground and the walls, so each arena ends up a mess.
Between rounds you pick one of three perks, like Ricochet Paint or Ghillie Suit, and spend tokens from eliminations and placings on weapons, grenades and paint. The music and every sound effect are synthesised in your browser. No real paint was wasted. Several virtual trees were.
A quick guide for your first session. The machine wrote the game; we wrote this bit from its README.
Each round drops you into a new arena with 31 CPU players. Move with WASD and aim and fire with the mouse.
You only see what’s in your line of sight. Use walls, bushes, tall grass and smoke grenades to stay hidden.
Stay ahead of the purple paint storm as it closes in.
Finish high enough to go through: top 16 in the first round, then top 10, 6 and 3, and last one standing in the final.
Between rounds, pick one of three perks and spend tokens on weapons, grenades and paint.
Your run ends at the first round you don’t make the cut.
